Cattaro Hotel returned to its theatrical roots this year, with theatre performances in August and October by the very talented acting duo, Rada Đuričin and Vjera Mujović.
Did you know the wing of the building where you attend brunch and other events is called Napoleon’s Theatre? And it’s not just a nickname. It actually is Napoleon’s Theatre- erected in 1810.
Wanting to revive our historic theater, we invited Rada Đuričin and Vjera Mujovic to bring “Mala Crna Haljina” (“Little Black Dress”) to our hotel for the occasion of International Festival KotorArt. The annual summer festival features art, music, culture, fashion and more. Both actresses played celebrated French fashion design legend, Coco Chanel, at different stages of her life.
Rada Đuričin says she knew Cattaro Hotel was Napoleon’s theatre venue and thought it would be incredibly beautiful to use the space for the same purpose again. Combined with the aesthetic similarities between Cattaro Hotel and Coco Chanel’s former home – Hotel Ritz Paris, the actresses knew it would be an ideal setting.
The second occasion saw the actresses return for a performance of “Covek, Coveku” (“Man to Man”) at the close of October. Man to Man is a play about what one man says to another. “In a time of plenty of tough news, it’s our pleasure to deliver some good news and good-feeling stories,” explained Vjera Mujovic.
The play celebrates the literary greats of the region- Ivo Andrić, Branko Ćopić, Bora Stanković, Isidora Sekulić, Momo Kapor and Mica Danović. It’s a show about stories and storytelling, especially important in the age of mobile phones and fragmented stories through the likes of Instagram captions and blink-and-you-miss-it Stories. The artists explain there’s never been a more wonderful time to celebrate stories by the great writers in history. To share the good and the beauty they spread.
While the play has been staged for some time across multiple venues in Belgrade, it was its first time to arrive to Kotor.
“Kotor [Stari Grad] je teatar u neki nacin… Nije slucajno da svaka kuca ovde ima svoj historija, historija porodice, pomorstva, ta koncentracija zanimljivosti, ta prica, legenda, mitova… sigurno za nas je velika inspiracija.”
– Vjera Mujovic
“Kotor [Old Town] is a theater in a way… It’s not an accident that every house here has its history, its family history, maritime culture, that concentration of interest, that story, legends, myths… it is surely a great inspiration to us.”
– Vjera Mujovic
